Topic of the class: The Media
Goals of the class:
Practical - to practice new lexical units in monologue and dialogue on the topic "The Media"; to develop grammar skills;
Sociocultural - to broaden students' outlook;
Professional - to evaluate the quality of work of the colleagues according to the grammatical and phonological criteria;
Educative - to develop the value orientation and positive attitude to English language.
Goals of the activity:
training and practicing of the students' skills (grammar & lexic);
acquaintance with the world of the media and its rules;
Description of the activity:
1. The beginning of the class:
Warm-up activity:
Students should answer on teacher's questions:
- Which English language news channels do you watch? (e.g. the BBC, CNN)
- Is it difficult for you to understand?
- Do you have any experience of reading foreign newspapers? How do they differ from our Ukrainian?
2. The main part:
Training in speaking.
1) Students got special cards with unknown words and phrases. They should guess the meaning of these words or possible translation at least.
2) The next task is from the book New English File Upper-Intermediate by Oxenden, Latham-Koenig. p. 79
3) The task is called "Interview". The instructions: Imagine, that you are giving an interview to the famous newspaper. Decide which role would you take a journalist or a star. You have 10-15 min.
4) The task is called "Through the time". Discussion of the short videos with interviews from deferent years. After watching these videos students should comment on them and find some peculiarities which are connected with:
-time and setting;
-types of questions and answers;
-the behaviour (or at least the manner of speaking)of the interviewee and interviewer;
Speak on the possible differences and development of the media through the years.

5) Training monologue skills. Students should answer on teacher's questions:
You’ve got a job in the one of the media
service. Which one would like to work in and why? What post would you like to
take? What are the main points of your post? Generally describe your work.
You have 5 min. to think and 3-5 min. to speak.
3. Closing and home-task.
-to learn new words from the cards;
-to transcribe one of the following videos which were given in the class.
Additional comments and conclusions
Group-project:
Students are supposed to make their own video-interviews with using their blogs. They are free to choose the topic. The length of the interview is 2-3 min. They should download their videos on their blogs and give a short comment about the interview itself, to make a kind of an annotation. The students have to leave comments on colleagues' posts with their videos. Deadline is in two weeks.
I can say that your blog is well structured (mentioning time for each activity and short description of each); to watch 3 videos during the lesson is a good listening practice for 4th year students;

I like that there is a warm-up activity at the beginning of your class, it will help the students to enter into the foreign language atmosphere rather easily.The task for group-project is very unusual and creative! I guess the students will do it with great pleasure and inspiration. And of course videos are very useful! 5 points!

ОтветитьУдалитьThe first thing I like is the video material given, because listening and understanding are the main problems of students (Beatles - amazing choice!!!). As for the hometask - it's one of the most creative and interesting I've ever seen. The process of making own interview would be a great language practice.
ОтветитьУдалитьConcerning the lesson, I think it is perfect-structured. Video materials are really helpful for studying such theme as "media". For 4-th year sudents I suppose they(videos) are interesting and informative. The blog itself a little bit depressing, but the games in the upper right corner are give hope for amusing lesson.
